Dry Needling at K-Flow Therapy

Performed by Sam – Advanced Dry Needling Practitioner

What Dry Needling Is

Dry needling is a precise technique used to calm overloaded or fatigued muscles by stimulating the nervous system.
It helps release deep tension, improve mobility and support better movement quality, especially for people who train often or spend long hours sitting.

Performed by a Fully Trained and Insured Practitioner

All dry needling at K-Flow Therapy is performed by Sam, a fully insured remedial therapist with formal qualifications in both advanced and superficial dry needling.

Sam has received comprehensive training through:

Advanced Dry Needling Certification – CPD Health Courses
Sam renews this qualification every three years and is an active CPD Health member, completing ongoing education and updated safety modules.

Superficial Dry Needling Training under Myotherapist Ian Selvarajoo
Sam trained directly under respected myotherapist Ian Selvarajoo at Good Health Group Clinic in Brighton East, developing safe and effective techniques for superficial needling of the neck, shoulders, hips and lower back.

This combination of training ensures dry needling is delivered safely, professionally and only when clinically appropriate.

Why I Use It

Some muscles become “stuck” in protective tension and don’t fully relax with massage alone.
Dry needling provides a quick and accurate stimulus to help the muscle reset and reduce guarding.

I typically use dry needling when your movement assessment shows:

  • restricted range of motion

  • stubborn, deep tightness

  • neuromuscular fatigue

  • compensation from training

  • overuse patterns or repetitive load

Dry Needling and the Muscle Spindle Reflex

For active individuals and athletes, dry needling can also influence the muscle spindle reflex — the system that senses muscle stretch and controls how your body responds.

When a muscle is overloaded or fatigued, the spindle can become hypersensitive, causing the muscle to tighten even more.

Dry needling may help by:

  • reducing excessive spindle sensitivity

  • calming protective reflexes

  • improving the muscle’s ability to contract and relax properly

  • supporting smoother, more efficient movement patterns

In simple terms, if a muscle feels like it’s “always on”, dry needling can help switch it off so you can move freely again.
This is why many runners, lifters, cyclists, footballers and court-sport athletes find it helpful for restoring quality movement after heavy training.

How It Helps

  • Improves mobility

  • Reduces muscle guarding

  • Releases deep, stubborn tension

  • Helps recovery during heavy training periods

  • Supports movement quality for active people

  • Assists with chronic tightness caused by load or posture

What It Feels Like

During the session you may feel a quick muscle twitch, a dull pressure or a heavy sensation.
Most people describe it as unusual but relieving.
Temporary soreness for 24 to 48 hours is common and settles naturally.

How I Use It During Treatment

Dry needling is not used as a standalone fix, nor is it applied routinely.
I use it only when it benefits your movement and pair it with:

  • remedial or sports massage

  • myofascial release

  • IASTM

  • cupping

  • simple corrective exercises

This ensures the improvement holds and reduces the chance of tightness returning.

Safety

Dry needling at K-Flow Therapy is performed by a practitioner who is:

  • fully trained in advanced dry needling

  • trained in superficial dry needling under a senior myotherapist

  • fully insured

  • up-to-date with CPD Health safety standards

  • clinically experienced with athletes and active individuals

Your safety and comfort are always the first priority.

Is Dry Needling Right For You?

If you’re dealing with tension that keeps returning or movement that feels restricted or “stuck”, dry needling may be an appropriate option.
During your session, I will assess your movement patterns and explain whether dry needling is suitable for your condition.
